Listening to music often helps writers (and many other professionals) enjoy their work more, but depending on the genre, music can also distract from work as well. If I listen to music when I’m writing, I tend to write the lyrics over and over again rather than what I’m supposed to be working on. To combat boredom while also getting work done, I’ve created a wordless playlist to help you stay on track.
The first song featured is North, an instrumental track by Phoenix. This song has a beautiful bassline, and has no vocals aside from a lone wolf howl. The nature noises allow you to mentally transport yourself into a forest in the middle of nowhere, making it perfect to listen to while writing for outdoorsy companies like REI or Patagonia.
The second song on the playlist is Unlocking the Mind by Samuel Bohn, from the soundtrack of The Theory of Everything. It captures the bittersweet tone of the movie perfectly, and can help you sway hearts just the same.
Next is Experience by Ludovico Einaudi, another classical piece. Deep and haunting, it’s no wonder this song is used in several films and documentaries. Hopefully it’ll inspire you to write copy that’s just as moving.
The following three songs are all from Ratatat, an instrumental duo that produces instrumental tunes somewhere between rock and hip-hop. Guitar and keyboard riffs are their specialty, and Loud Pipes, Cherry, and Seventeen Years are no exception. This is perfect for writing for more urban, contemporary brands like Vans.
Finally, the last five songs are all in the Retrowave category, using both 80s and neo-80s influences to create sounds straight out of Bladerunner. If you’re writing anything nostalgic, futuristic, or somewhere in between, listening to this playlist can definitely put you in the right mindset.
